Alioscopy to Show 3D TV that Doesn't Require Glasses at CES
Updated 1/9/2009: We visited the Alioscopy booth at CES, check out our latest blog to get our impressions and to see our pictures of the 3D technology.
Amidst all the overly-enthusiastic spam we've been receiving for CES ("industry-changing breakthrough in earbud technology!" ... sure), we finally got something that piqued our interest. A company called Alioscopy says they will be showing off a 40 inch 3D TV at CES 2009. That's not a terribly big deal until you read on and discover that it's autostereoscopic, which is a fancy way of saying you don't need 3D glasses to watch.
Now we're really interested.
Ultimately, those silly glasses are the reason 3D tech hasn't really taken off yet. They're a nuisance to wear, can cause eye-strain, and they constantly give you that nagging feeling in the back of your mind that you look like a complete ninny when you wear them.
So if Alioscopy can pull off a TV that doesn't require glasses and also doesn't require hallucinogens to reach the full 3D effect, then this will be a huge breakthrough in TV tech. This TV will still display in HD quality, too. And it's coming just in time, considering that many movie-makers are starting to film in 3D. If these two endeavors can match up, we could have some pretty awesome entertainment in our homes before too long.
Now don't get too excited. We haven't seen the demo (although you can bet we'll be looking forward to it at CES), and Alioscopy isn't entirely forthcoming about how all this works, or how well it works. So we'll have to judge for ourselves. But in the meantime, I'll be dreaming of a 3D Christmas ... in a few years.
In the meantime, we've reviewed the current selection of (sadly 2D) flat panel TVs. And don't forget these other blog posts that are in 3D (if you squint just right):
