The LG 42LGX is sort of the Two-Face of televisions. From the front it looks rather unassuming, dressed in high gloss black with some red trim. The red trim though actually isn’t red trim at all. Turn the TV around to view the back and you find that the entire backside is painted red.
Like most LCD TVs, the 42LGX comes with a matching pedestal base, which also has some red trim on it. The lines of the TV are kept clean by concealing most of the buttons. The speakers are mounted below the screen to keep its width narrower. This allows the TV to fit into more entertainment centers.
• Intelligent Sensor
• 120 Hz Refresh Rate
• Invisible Speaker System
• Full 1080p Resolution
The LG 42LGX features a built-in light sensor which LG calls an Intelligent Sensor. This sensor measures the ambient light in a room and adjusts the TV accordingly. This helps to ensure better picture quality settings all the time since most of us don’t ever change our TV settings. LG also points out that by automatically adjusting the brightness of the TV it can help save energy as well.
The latest trend in LCD TVs is refresh rate. Every manufacturer is racing to put out sets with ever higher and higher refresh rates. The LG 42LGX features a 120 Hz refresh rate which doubles the refresh rate of standard televisions. There are models available with higher refresh rates, but these models will cost more and the difference is negligible.
Audio expert Mark Levinson helped design the speakers on LG’s LGX series. The result is speakers that sound more lifelike and inviting than before. The speakers are also “invisible” which means they are concealed beneath some of the TV’s frame.
The best possible resolution one can hope to see on their TV is 1080p and of course the 42LGX has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. Even if you don’t own a Blu-ray player, you can still take advantage of the higher resolution. The 42LGX will upconvert all signals to 1080p. Many new camcorders also record 1080p video as well so home movies will look better than ever.
Most televisions operate at 30 frames per second, which is fine. The problem is most movies are filmed at 24 frames per second. The LG42LGX displays HD movies in their original 24 frames per second helping to create a more film-like viewing experience.
The expert reviews for the LG 42LGX were mostly positive. The 4 HDMI connections are better than most TVs and the 120 Hz provided a smoother, jutter-free picture. The picture quality of the 42LGX is sensational. The black level was good, although LCDs in general still don’t produce blacks as well as plasmas. The ability to adjust the picture was easy, although they could have included more options to fine tune the picture.
Users also found the picture quality to be top notch, among the best of the LCDs. The menu was easy to navigate and figure out. The TV has many more connections than most users would ever need, but it is nice to have them just in case.
The LG 42LGX combines a unique look with great picture quality. Anyone looking for a TV that will stand out should consider the LG 42LGX.
