Small HDTVs Outsell Big HDTVS 3:2

Retrevo Pulse released a new study that says the ratio of purchases of TVs with smaller screens, defined as any screen up to 37 inches, compared to larger screen TVs, those between 37 and 50 inches, has shifted to 3:2 from 1:1 just one year ago. For the first time, August sales results for HDTV smaller sets surpassed those of their larger screen counterparts.
The analyst attributed the shift to the following:
- The completion of the digital TV transition on June 12 was a motivating factor in a new TV purchases by a wider population segment.
- More households are now adding multiple HDTV sets for various rooms in the house. Smaller sets for smaller rooms like bedrooms and kitchens.
- More HD programming by cable, satellite and Internet TVproviders is now available, increasing consumer demand for HDTVs.
Analysts may overcomplicate this pattern. The bottom line: budgets are tight this year. Yes, we’re still in a recession. It’s not hard to conclude consumers are talking with their wallets. Smaller is better than nothing.
Putting a positive spin on the study, Retrevo is forecasting "an especially good year for smaller-screen TVs." Last year’s holiday HDTV sales were led by 52” LCD HDTVs. This year? My bet is on the smaller sets. After all, good things come in small packages.
