Just when it appeared as if JVC was going to get out of the TV business altogether and focus on car and home audio, they released their first 55-inch 3D LED TV and it is their best LED TV to date. The JVC JLE55SP4000 Black Sapphire is the first in a new line of HDTVs with a satisfyingly large screen and a set of features that is quite impressive overall.
We loved this JVC TV model for its surprising sound quality, which is one of the TV's best features. On the downside, the refresh rate could use an update. While conventional media, such as cable TV programs and DVDs, only support a refresh rate of 120Hz, the 240Hz upscaling that some models offer provides a noticeable improvement in movement smoothness over the JVC's 120Hz refresh rate. However, the 20,000,000: 1 dynamic contrast ratio and the edge-lit LED technology add greatly to the picture quality, while reducing the power consumption. It consumes only 150 watts of power when in operation, which is well below average, and the 55-inch Black Sapphire competes well with other sets on our list in that area.
The TV comes with four pairs of passive 3D glasses to go along with JVC's patented XinemaView 3D technology. The XinemaSound 3D acoustic technology combines 45 watts of speaker output power with an integrated woofer for a virtual surround sound experience that matches or exceeds that of the picture quality, without the need for additional speakers.
The JVC JLE55SP4000 connects to Wi-Fi and comes preloaded with Netflix, YouTube, Vudu and Pandora apps. It has an Ethernet port as well as two USB and four HDMI inputs. But gamers should be aware that the TV doesn't come with a gaming mode option. Another perk of this set is that it is an economical purchase when compared with 55-inch LED TVs with comparable specs.
Fortunately, JVC's line of LED TVs comes with a full one-year warranty. Even though this set meets expectations with its warranty, it lacks a solid base of customer support; JVC's website doesn't offer live chat support and it doesn't provide a FAQs section for this particular TV model.
The JVC JLE55SP4000 is the first in a new line of JVC LED TVs and it's the best we've seen from them so far. It boasts their biggest screen ever at 55-inches and has many impressive specs to go along with it, though some, like the refresh rate, could still be improved. The stellar sound quality outshines most of the TVs on our lineup. The lack of customer service options is a bit off-putting, but the affordability, combined with solid specs, makes this a great purchase.
JVC's first 55-inch LED TV has one of the best audio systems in our lineup.
JVC's customer service is lacking and the refresh rate could use a lift.
The local dimming feature, stellar sound quality and affordable price make this set a solid purchase.
