Sony Preps Bigger OLED Screen, Samsung Takes OLED Smaller
OLED has long been something we've heard about, drooled over and coveted. However, the 11" offering from Sony did little more than whet our appetites for something bigger. Enter rumor mill: Sony may have a larger screen offering this year, as soon as September even. Oh man. It's nice to see a manufacturer pushing forward, technically (snicker), despite the economy. Rumor has it that Sony will be unveiling round two of their OLED line in September at IFA. Specs? All we know is this new line is supposed to be bigger and badder than the one before. But we don't have hopes for a really big screen. When the original offering, the XEL-1, is only 11 inches, even if Sony doubled the screen size it will still be only 22 inches. Bigger, better but still not what we really want to see. Actually, we expect it will probably be close to the 27" screen Sony had on display at CES 2008.
However, at the rate Sony is going, we probably won't be seeing anything we really want until much later. But, the good news is that OLED is expected to take over the small screen market. Samsung Mobile Displays says within five years OLED will rule the small-screen market. From cell phones (not just smartphones, all cell phones) to digital cameras to portable game players, this technology will proliferate through all the small tech.
We're certain more rumors will surface before IFA hits about Sony's new OLED, so we'll keep you updated. Until then, check out our best LCD TVs to see how they'll compare to OLED. Also, check out these other blog posts for more on the latest tech news:
